| Match Report: |
County Hall II's got their season off to a fine start in a nervous encounter at newly promoted Offley and Stopsley.
Having won the toss, skipper Nick Marsh had no hesitation in asking Offley to bat on a damp wicket, keen to give his new bowling attack the chance to shine on an otherwise dull day.
Mike Jones and Dave Melisi started brightly with both taking early wickets brought about by tight bowling and phenomenal fielding. Matt Bartlett showing his lightning reflexes at gulley pouching a couple of sharp chances and Andy Mumford in the deep taking a great catch over his shoulders.
Offley never really looked like getting going and the combination of the long grass on the outfield and the fact that they never really looked like trying to force the run rate limped to a very gettable 126 all out, only Patel (44) and Chawdry (29) showing any kind of resistance. Williamson (2 for 6 off 3) and Mitchell (3 for 11 off 4.3) routed the tail taking the final 5 wickets for 17 runs.
In reply County Hall started confidently, trying to play their shots, but a mixture of good bowling and uneven bounce saw the top order collapse to leave the score on 34 for 4. Mitchell (42) and Melisi (14) set about redressing the balance playing some good cricket, waiting for and punishing the inevitable bad ball.
Once Melisi had departed, Nick Marsh (25 n/o)came to the crease still needing 55 runs. County Hall once again pressed the self destruct button as wickets continued to fall to poor shots off even poorer bowling. Fortunately Marsh held his nerve and rode his luck taking County Hall over the line with 2 wickets left.
