| Match Report: |
Despite losing three players to international duty (at Lords watching the test match) County Hall recorded a straightforward home win over fellow promotional hopefuls Ickleford to confirm their promotion to Division 2 of the Herts league.
The visitors won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat first on a damp wicket which coupled with a wet outfield was always likely to prove difficult to score on.
This proved to be the case with the first wicket going down at 15 with the second and third without any further addition. This brought Reilly to the wicket and he proved to be the only Ickleford batsman to have any success and was the only one to make double figures.
Wickets fell regularly with both openers bowling mammoth spells, Mickey Jones taking 5 wickets in his farewell performance before returning to his mankini business in western Australia. He was given excellent support by Mark Batchelor, taking four wickets of his own.
Ickleford only made it into three figures with a last wicket partnership of 35 before home Captain Chris Graves picked up the last wicket.
Although way short of a competitive total, County Hall were mindful of the likely weather interference and promoted Tommy Barnaby to open the innings to give the run chase some impetus. Despite two stoppages for rain he was easily able to do this, putting on 93 for the first wicket with Wayne Langton in just 21 overs.
After the loss of Langton, Barnaby and Devine, the latter only just falling short of 500 league runs for the season, the target was reached without any further alarm.
There was another twist in the tale later in the evening when it was discovered that league leaders Clarendon Chipperield had suffered a surprise defeat which meant that the Leahoe club replaced them at the top of the table with just one fixture remaining.
Victory at home this saturday to Waltham Cross Rosedale will guarantee CH the Division Three title and long awaited league silverware.
MOM Tommy Barnaby
