| Match Report: |
On a blisteringly hot day at Leahoe on saturday, the 1sts lost their unbeaten league record to local rivals Hertingfordbury.
The visitors won an important toss and decided to bat first on a very dry wicket. The new ball continually burst throught the crusty surface making batting difficult throughout. An impressive opening spell from Mark Batchelor kept the scoring down and when Gronert and Palmer were removed in quick succession. Hertimgfordbury were in some trouble at 60-4. Gibbons was dropped early in his innings but he continued to take the attack to a rapidly tiring bowling attack. Even when he was dismissed for a belligerent 75, at 140-6,County Hall were still hopeful of restricting their neighbours to a total well below 200. Scott Bambling had other ideas however and continued the assault against some tired bowling and fielding.
A tea time score of 232 was not unattainable given the lightning quick outfield but the wicket was still providing some variable bounce. CH were forced to shuffle their batting order and made a bright start thanks to Szemi opening positively. After his dismissal though, the home team were unable to build the one substantial partnership that might have brought them back into the contest. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and at 138-9, a heavier defeat was on the cards. Only a last wicket partnership of 36 between keeper Tommy Barnaby and rabbit Ian Hibbeard brought 6 batting bonus points and some respectability to the home team total, our lowest of the season to date.
In truth a very disappointing result given the season so far and one that we must bounce back from next week to maintain league position. Improvement in all disciplines needed.
All credit to Hertingfordbury and their skipper to call back a CH batsman when clearly not out. Well done.
MOM Tom Barnaby, kept well on a tricky track and batted well with the tail. Also kept his gob shut with his new missus in attendance.
