| Match Report: |
Having won the toss, County Hall elected to bat on what looked a good Leahoe wicket. However, some tight Harpenden bowling restricted the home side to just 38 runs off the first 15 overs. In that 15th over, having just seen off the new ball, County Hall lost Richard Hale and Adrian Devine in successive deliveries, and when Andy Bartlett fell soon afterwards it was left to Andrew Szemiako and Andy Mumford to rebuild the innings. This they did superbly with a 4th wicket partnership of 107 to set the platform for a decent total.
Mumford's innings of 43 was a continuation of his good form from last season when asked to step up to the 1st XI.For Szemiako it was a welcome return to form having struggled for much of last season. His innings was full of characteristic big shots and Harpenden's bowlers had no answer as he went on to complete his second League century for the Club. When he was dismissed for 105, County Hall's score had reached 223 and, despite a flurry of late wickets, the home side were able to post a total of 242 for 8.
In reply, Harpenden lost two early wickets to Mark Batchelor but opener Laurence Jones (68) took the attack to the County Hall bowlers as he and Mark Fettes (55) looked to set up a thrilling run chase. County Hall took wickets at vital times, including two for Mike Jones on his 1st XI debut, but it was only when the last pair were at the wicket with three overs to go that the visitors gave up the run chase to hold out for an honourable draw, Batchelor ending up with figures of 4 for 47 from 11 overs.
Man of the Match: Andrew Szemiako
