| Match Report: |
On a really cold, damp miserable day, Abbots Langley and County Hall played out a thrilling game of Cricket at the Manor House Ground.
Having won the toss, Chris Graves asked the home side to have a bat. However, Abbots Langley took full advantage, in particular opener Craig Smith, who batted through the innings for an unbeaten 103. He received good support from Jay Parmar (33), putting on 84 for the first wicket, although a regulation catch in the gully should really have been taken. He then put on 62 with Aussie Mitch Inglis (46) for the 2nd wicket, before his unbeaten partnership of 93 with Barry Warner (48*) allowed the Abbots Langley captain to declare with the total on 239-2.
County Hall felt it was a generous declaration and, on a good wicket, saw no reason why they could not reach their target of 240, especially after receiving an extra over to do it. However, the visitors lost Richard Hale early in the innings and the 2nd wicket partnership between Andy Bartlett and Adrian Devine was kept relatively quiet by a fine young Abbots Langley bowling attack.
Bartlett and Devine had just started to push the acceleration button when Barry Warner bowled Adrian Devine for 41. Bartlett continued to push hard for runs, ably supported by John Schlaepfer, but his dismissal for a fine 80 resulted in the County Hall innings stalling somewhat. When Andrew Szemiako was out in the 40th over, the visitors still required 75 runs for victory with only 8 overs in which to do it.
Enter Tommy Barnaby. He and Schlaepfer scored 66 runs in 6 overs of which Barnaby scored 51. It has to be said that Barnaby's innings was quite brilliant. There was plenty of hard hitting but not one slog shot. His dismissal off the last ball of the 46th over took County Hall into a winning position and, despite Schlaepfer falling 3 runs short of the total, it was a victory duly completed with 3 balls to spare.
Man of the Match: Tommy Barnaby
